How to Migrate Email Accounts Without Using FTP

Sheikh Mahfuzur Rahman

Migrating email accounts from one server to another using a FTP client is the most common procedure. What if your current server does not provide you with an FTP account? You may have to go through a complicated and lengthy process of copying your email massages using a mail client like Outlook or Thunderbird from one mail box to  another. I have found a solution to this problem. Using this procedure you can transfer your email massages from one host to  another very easily. So learn how to migrate email accounts without using FTP. You will need IMAP enabled in your email service to complete email migration. You can also transfer/move/copy your gmail account massages using Imapsync.

Few days ago one of  my clients was changing their email hosting service, but their current hosting provider does not support FTP access. So I have to research a lot to find an easier way of syncing email accounts. After a lot of troubles I found a service called Imapsync. Though they offer a paid desktop application for syncing or backing up email accounts we will use their free Imapsync online.

What you will need

You will need your current email account address, password and mail server address. Your mail server address is something like mail.example.com or imap.example.com or your server IP address. You will also need your destination email account address, password and destination mail server address. Your email address should be similar to your current account address. If you have not created your email account in your new hosting provider yet, create now. Your new mail server address should be your server’s IP address if you have not changed your domain name server yet. Or it can be something like your servername.hostingprovidername.com. If you are using cPanel server go to your control panel. Click on Server Information, see the image below:

You will get your server IP address or server name there. Another important thing is don’t change your name servers until you have completed full synchronization or migration of your email accounts.

Migrate Email Accounts Without Using FTP

  • Go to Imapsync

Imapsync online

  • In the left side fields insert your currents email account address, password and imap mail server address.
  • In the right side fields insert your new email account, password and server address or IP address.
  • Click on Sync or resync.
  • The synchronization should start. If it does not start check your details.
  • If you want to stop migration click on Abort button.

Wait for a while. Imapsync will copy all your email folders and massages from your current mail server to your new sever. After the process completes, read the log of imapsync. Click on Bottom of imapsync log to analyse the result. Now visit your new server’s webmail to see if the migration was completed properly. If you have two or more email accounts repeat this process for each account. I think now you know How to migrate email accounts without using FTP. Visit my blog for new tutorials.
